Cardiac
Arrest Survivor Network
(CASN) Finally... a physician equipped with an ICD! While most
caregivers genuinely care about us... few can really relate to living
with a shock delivering electronic box inside us. The founders of this
site, Dr. James Seder and Linda Miller Seder have "been there - done
that." He got an ICD after experiencing SCD. Her perspective is that of
a family member - on whom it is always harder than those of us with the
implant. An ICD equipped RN is on the CASN board of directors.
This organization provides a complete psychosocial support
network to SCD survivors, families, and those at risk offering
interactive support strategies to help us meet our emotional challenges
including:

focus on a myriad of heart and cardiovascular issues.
Clinical
Trials.gov Are you willing to be a guinea pig? At any
given time, as
many as a dozen EP researchers are looking for test subjects. Before
you say, "No Way!" think about this: You are still alive because people
offered to test new devices, meds, and ideas. I did, with my first ICD
being an investigational unit. Plus, some of these scientists are
working on projects to find ways to cure or lessen problems you might
have... that are not yet treatable.

groups I have ever seen! This site also has a superb (Barnes &
Noble) associate bookstore.

well known ICD makers for their share of the implantable business. A

to reduce inappropriate shocks.
eMedicine.com
An online
medical encyclopeadia (in progress.) Ultimately,
there will be few undefined terms and jargon as this site seeks to
offer translations of medicalese into humanese. Of special interest:
Endocardial
Solutions, Inc. This company develops, makes, and sells
the hardware that
makes electrophysiology studies possible. Doctors use ES hardware to do
the arrhythmia mapping to locate problems in our "cardiac ignition
systems."
The
EP Lab A very useful
site... with separate sections for patients and
professionals. As we often mention... the EPS (electrophysiology study)
can be the most frightening aspect of getting an ICD. This site has
straight forward answers to allay the anxieties. For EP profressionals,
this site provides various equipment analysis, technique discussions,
and even tips on turning a Cath lab into an EP lab.
FCC

the most minute details of who gets what radio frequencies, this will
provide insight. Most of this deals with a Medtronic petition to use

Both are official journals of the North American Society of
Pacing and Electrophysiology (NASPE) and the International Cardiac
Pacing and Electrophysiology Society (ICPES.)
The site also permits ordering many highly technical texts,
CD-ROM, and other media. One such title is Clinical Aspects of
Implantable Cardioverter-Defibrillator Therapy a booklet for
physicians entering the field of electrophysiology. It is part of a
larger work called Clinical Approaches to
Tachyarrhythmias Series, Volume 9 which is NOT for anyone
who does not understand the highly technical elements inside our magic
boxes.
Guidant

health professionals. If you can handle a lot of scientific
terminology, you will find a wealth of academic and research papers
using the following:

Health Network This is the online version of the very
consumer oriented TV
program you see running in many doctors' offices and clinics. It was
formerly American Health Network and is a joint venture of Fox
Entertainment Group and AHP Partners. This service has originated many
ground breaking webcasting firsts such as live births and heart
surgeries.
Healthy Heart Market
Going into a grocery store and reading labels (especially in
the prepared soup aisles) can be enough of a shock to start a V-tach
epsiode. Now, you are as close as a mouse click to shopping for items not
loaded with sodium and other elements which can harm you.
theHEART.org
This is THE
best site on line for cardiology health
professionals. Not only does it offer comprensive daily
breaking news updates - including the latest results from researchers,
theHEART.org provides numerous netcasts, chats, streaming reports, and
PowerPoint displays. Many of the programs offer CME credits. The scope
of the board, editors, and contributors is spectacular... coming from

especially outstanding - check our March, News

the most recent cardiac related news.
Heart
Operations If
you are a fan of the real life look inside an ER on TLC...
this is a fun visit. Don't go if you are squeamish about stop motion
video of the inside of someone's chest. It's neat stuff if you want to
view what you may have undergone.
(HP)
Heartstream What happens to people who suffer SCD or SCA
and do not have
an ICD? That is why we are a strong advocate for AED (automatic
external defibrillator) public accessability. This is one place to
start if looking for information on AED technology. Among the Hewlett
Packard offerings is one device that is small enough to be hand held!
Information about related products such as an ECG event analyzer and
bateries are also available.
Heart
Web A www-site
similar to The ZAPPER
except it is directed more toward the health care professional and
researcher with links to many related sites.
A slide show: Management of Atrial
Fibrillation by Dr. John Fisher is especially worth the time to
watch, for patients as well as health care professionals.

California who has built a website to share his story with others.
Anyone facing either an EP Study or ICD implant should read HIS
STORY which gives a very personal look at the emotions we (and our
loved ones) face, and how one family dealt with this change in life.
The site also features some very nice pitures dealing with the
technology that keeps us alive.
Five
Jewels In My Chest Greg (Turk) Ozdemir's online support
group for people near
him in Connecticut.
Haifa ICD Group
The original ICD support group in Israel where many of the
new devices are first tested & implanted. Fantastic Medtronic
support files & links. Dr. Zvi Har'El (not a cardiologist - a patient)
has really made this a labor of love.
Heart Help Net Lee
Roush's online support group has joined forces. She and
Ginger have spent a lot of time nurturing this site with quite a bit of
information on CHF and cardiomyopathy with a special focus for women.
Heart
Throb This is one individual's homepage featuring a
potpourri of
personal interests, including cardiology. Some of the java/QT apps are
a bit annoying, so you may want to go to these videos directly:
Jan's Long
QT Pate With so many of our readers' families touched by
L-QT... this
is a must visit site.
Jon's Place
A very extensive site with its primary focus on CHF. I'd call

An eclectic site by a pacemaker recipient seeking to answer
all questions that might arise, while selling personal web sites and

why there is such a similarity in appearance.
implantable.com

departments of user friendly access to scores of databases. Currently

IBN recently began charging for access to some of their
online material. Many items remain availablae for free such as AN
ANSWER FOR FAINTING (syncope,) although the video version is no
longer available.
Watch
their latest reports on RealPlayer format. It's smart to subscribe
to Ivanhoe's free weekly (emailed) newsletter, First-to-Know Bulletin.
I don't know how they do it, but they manage to routinely "scoop" the
media giants with advances in medical research and treatments.
Journal of the Canadian

electrophysiology professionals, edited
by Dr. Michael Rosengarten (who also designed OnLine Journal below) This has many
multilingual sources and several training videos, including one
excellent 28 minute program, Life with your ICD,

use) equipment may fill a need in the future.
